I am by no means a broker or a financial adviser. But I will give it a shot.
If you are looking into stocks. I would go with an ETF of a certain sector of China. An ETF is traded like a stock but covers an entire sector of the stock market. If you were looking at REITs of china you could find an ETF on that Real Estate.
I currently use Etrade. It takes a little while to get used to but they have some good research tools.
Also if you are going to get into stocks. I recommend investing a minimum of 10,000 dollars per stock purchase. The reason being is it cost on average 12.00 per stock purchase and sale. Therefore just to buy and sell a stock it could cost you 24 dollars. If you only have 500 dollars that you would only start out with 476 from the beginning.
Mutual funds in a Roth IRA would by my recommendation for someone just starting out. You can find some foriegn mutual funds that have 0 charge with no taxing of broker fees.
