I need something that will explain it to the complete novice. I don’t even know enough to really know how to ask! I want to know definitions of things like stocks, options, bonds, brokerage, etc, and all about investing.

There’s a big book in the library called “ValueLine” and you can look up stocks in there. They’d have lists of newly researched stocks, and you could sort them by different criteria. The book is still in libraries: you can go and look at it. Or, people would subscribe, but it cost $500 for a few months. Also, most people just took the advice of their brokers. Only about 20% of the population invested back then, and most were widows of businessmen!
